La Mission

"La Mission" was filmed in San Francisco's Mission District and shows the true harm that alcohol and violence play in our community. This film has the ability to educate and empower.

A reformed inmate and recovering alcoholic, Che has worked hard to redeem his life and do right by his pride and joy: his only son, Jes, whom he has raised on his own after the death of his wife. Che’s path to redemption is tested, however, when he discovers Jes is gay. In a rage, Che violently beats Jes, disowning him. He loses his son – and loses himself in the process. Isolated and alone, Che comes to realize that his patriarchal pride is meaningless to him, and to maintain his idea of masculinity, he’s sacrificed the one thing that he cherishes most – the love of his son. To survive his neighborhood, Che has always lived with his fists. To survive as a complete man, he’ll have to embrace a side of himself he’s never shown.

When Love is Not Enough

Public awareness and support represent one of SAMHSA’s priority initiatives. The goal of this initiative is to increase understanding of mental and substance use disorders. The hope is to achieve the full potential of prevention and to help people recognize and seek assistance for these health conditions with the same urgency as they would for any other health condition. SAMHSA is working in collaboration with NCADD, to recommend the movie When Love Is Not Enough The fact this movie is a message vehicle might alienate some members of the audience, but the strengths of AA are shown, not preached. Bill has a spiritual epiphany that brings his drinking to an end but that point is not belabored. It is a factor in his final sobriety but not a miracle cure.
